Strong quake strikes off India's Nicobar Islands

NEW DELHI: A strong earthquake struck west of India's remote Nicobar Islands on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, AFP reported.

The 6.2-magnitude quake hit at 8:48 am (0248 GMT) at a depth of 18 kilometres (11 miles).

The USGS said the quake's epicentre was 405 kilometres southwest of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an Indian territory which lies in the Bay of Bengal.

No tsunami warning was immediately issued.

The region is hit by frequent earthquakes caused by the meeting of the Indian plate and the Burmese microplate along an area known as the Andaman trench.
